Comenius come up trumps in close match
A fantastic match played at the new ground in Motvarjevci in eastern Slovenia saw Comenius hold on for a very tight 12-run victory over Mezica. Zoltan Mago hit a fantastic 69 and Attila Vakan hit 30, but none of the other Comenius players gor into double figures so the score only reached 128. However, that proved enough in the end as the Hungarian bowlers took all the Slovenian wickets, including a wonderful run-out by Domen Bohinc (on loan from Maribor) to deny Primos Pustoslemsek his half-century. |

Mezica triumph again as Comenius slump
Although they bowled well to restrict their visitors to 118-9 all out, Comenius could not muster enough runs to win, despite 41 from Zoltan Mago and 20 not out from captain Andy Grieve. Primoz Pustoslemsek took five wickets as the home side's youngsters succumbed to the pressure, earning himself the man of the match award for his haul after hitting 37 runs in the Mezica innings. The only other visitor to reach double figures was captain Borut Cegovnic, who followed up his 35 against Velden with 34 in this match to continue his own good form and inspire his team to another 11 points. |

Sadler can't stop Mezica opening with win
The 2009 CECL got off to a cracking start with a close victory for hosts Mezica over Velden. Home captain Borut Cegovnik scored 35 to help the Slovenes to 136 all out from 38.3 of their 40 overs, but he was only supported by Peter Rapac (25) and Mirko Rozej (20) - the big-hitting Pustoslemsek brothers both fell cheaply.
In reply Adrian Sadler top-scored for the Austrians with 36 (after taking two wickets), but they crashed to 93-9, thanks to Ales Pustoslemsek's 3-28. A heroic last-wicket stand almost gave Velden the victory, but captain Eric Holmes was given out lbw just six runs short of the target.

CECL gets underway with a long day of cricket in Hungary
Borut and his boys made the long road trip to Seregelyes Castle in Hungary for the inaugural match of the CECL. The poor batting of the hosts, Comenius, however, meant that three matches could be played in the space of a few hours, with the longest not even reaching the halfway point of the scheduled 40 overs. Mezica were successful twice before Comenius hit back to end the day on a high. Action and interviews were filmed for local TV (click here to watch).

CECL - giving more cricket to more natives in more countries
The conception of the Central European Cricket League is an attempt to stimulate more cricket in the Central European region, especially for native cricketers. Although there are no set rules on eligibility, a gentleman's agreement is in place to have as many native players in each team as possible and to restrict the influence of experienced expat cricketers. The five teams who have agreed to compete in the CECL in 2009 all faced each other at the Mezica tournament in 2007 and 2008. |
