Cricket in Kazakhstan - a report by Ian Wilson
We expats play indoor cricket, but I know of no games of cricket ever being played outdoors and there exist no cricket clubs at all.
The nationals only play football and rugby in international competions and golf courses do exist and there are some young players emerging, they obviously play tennis, squash and badminton and have some outstanding cyclists and olympic standard atheletes in gymnastics, boxing, weightlifting, swimming and track and field.
Parts of Kazakhstan would be conducive to outdoor cricket, where it is remarkeably green but the temperatures can be harsh and extremely high in the summer months.
I have thought of introducing cricket on a small scale to the local schools but I am a busy man in my job and the distances from the work place to the towns and villages are huge because of the oil and gas projects being remote from most populated areas.
We have played cricket for 3 years indoors with a version of SA action cricket and we have had many games between Britain and the "Colonials", even introducing Americans to the game. The standard has been remarkably high, with the NZ, SA, Indians and Aussies taking part and quite a few good club cricketers from the UK keeping the competitive edge going and the sledging was instantly forgotten over a few beers at the afternoon BBQs.
Below is a team picture from a recent game, I am in the hooped top back row middle. The picture was taken to present to a guy holding the white baseball cap in the front row who was leaving and his name, believe it or not, was Len. G. Hutton and yes he was a Yorkshire man!
We play football here and I was also the ladies football coach for the last 3 years and we play baseball on a proper base ball diamond against the Yanks of course.
